Giant Shark 'Contender' May Be Heading to Beaches
15 Jul
Summary
- Largest recorded male great white shark in Atlantic resurfaced after months.
- Shark 'Contender' was last tracked off North Carolina in April.
- New signal suggests shark may be migrating to popular summer destinations.

A massive great white shark, dubbed Contender, has reappeared after months of being out of satellite tracking range. This 14-foot predator, weighing 750kg, was last observed off the Outer Banks of North Carolina in April.
Researchers at OCEARCH, who tagged Contender in January 2025 off the Georgia and Florida coast, detected a weak signal on July 7. This "Z-ping" indicates the shark's tracking tag briefly broke the surface, but did not provide an exact location.
Experts suggest Contender may be undertaking its typical seasonal migration. White sharks in this region often travel north to forage in the waters of Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada during summer and early fall.
These areas offer favorable water temperatures and abundant food sources, including seals and large fish species. Contender's journey since January has already spanned over 7,000 miles along North America's eastern coastline.
Scientists are studying Contender's movements to better understand great white shark migration, behavior, and potential breeding grounds, contributing to conservation efforts for these ancient predators.
