A 42-year-old silverback western lowland gorilla, Jock, has died just ten days after his relocation to a new enclosure at Bristol Zoo Project. He was humanely euthanized after his health deteriorated following the move near Cribbs Causeway.
Jock, one of the UK's oldest silverbacks, had resided at Bristol Zoo since 2003. He was a vital part of the zoo's gorilla troop and a significant contributor to the European breeding program for critically endangered western lowland gorillas. His passing has deeply affected the zoo's staff.
The remaining gorillas in the troop are reportedly safe and under close observation as they adjust to Jock's absence. A comprehensive review is being conducted to ascertain the precise cause of Jock's illness and subsequent death, a spokesperson confirmed.
Western lowland gorillas are classified as critically endangered, facing threats from poaching and habitat loss. Their typical lifespan in the wild ranges from 35 to 40 years.
