Gorakhpur Braces for Rain: Officials Inspect Waterlogging Risks
26 Sep
Summary
- Officials inspected low-lying areas prone to waterlogging due to heavy rainfall.
- Drainage systems and pump operations were checked, showing effective water diversion.
- Authorities remain on alert, with suction machines and a helpline ready.
In anticipation of continuous rainfall and forecasts for heavy showers, divisional commissioner Indra Vikram Singh, accompanied by mayor Manglesh Srivastava and DIG Gorakhpur Range, conducted an inspection of low-lying areas susceptible to waterlogging in Gorakhpur. Municipal commissioner Ajay Jain and other civic officials were also present during the Saturday inspection.
The team assessed several locations, including the Sumer Sagar drain, where residents confirmed regular desilting efforts had maintained smooth water flow. Inspections beneath Dharamshala Bridge and at Rapti Complex revealed no significant water accumulation, with pumps effectively diverting water. However, engineers noted that an elevated culvert on Daudpur Canal Road causes backflow, necessitating pumping.
No waterlogging was observed at Champa Devi Park or other inspected sites, indicating normal life continued unaffected by the rain. The divisional commissioner urged municipal and Jal Kal department officials to remain on high alert for the next three to four days. They were instructed to keep suction machines prepared for immediate deployment and ensure the municipal helpline operates round the clock.
