Rock Barrier Slows Gomti River for Crucial Repairs
20 May
Summary
- Temporary rock barrier restricts Gomti River flow for barrage repairs.
- Repair work on Gomti Barrage is 60% complete and ongoing.
- City water supply remains normal, unaffected by the repairs.

A temporary rock and sandbag barrier has been constructed near Kudiya Ghat to manage the flow of the Gomti River, enabling essential repairs to the Gomti Barrage. This measure has reduced water levels, exposing significant amounts of accumulated waste and debris in the riverbed.
The flow restriction has directly impacted the livelihoods of local fishermen and heightened worries about the health of aquatic life already stressed by pollution. Officials have clarified that this temporary measure is solely for the barrage repairs and is unrelated to the Pakka Pul bridge construction.
Approximately 60 percent of the repair work on the Gomti Barrage is finished, with two teams working continuously on gate installation. The irrigation department anticipates the repairs will conclude in about a month. The Jal Kal department has assured the public that water supply operations are proceeding normally, with no impact on the city's water availability.
Water is being drawn from the river's lower bed, which continues to maintain an adequate flow to meet the city's water needs. The temporary nature of the barrier ensures that essential services remain uninterrupted despite the ongoing maintenance work.
