Goa Plateaus: Biodiversity Hotspots Revealed
4 Jun
Summary
- Betul plateau hosts 228 plant species, including endangered ones.
- Ninety-one bird species and other wildlife thrive on the plateau.
- Plateaus provide ecological services like carbon assimilation.

World Environment Day's emphasis on habitat conservation reveals the hidden ecological importance of Goa's plateaus. Once dismissed as barren and slated for development, a comprehensive study of the Betul plateau has uncovered a rich biodiversity. Researchers documented 228 plant species, including vulnerable and endangered varieties, and a vast array of fauna, comprising 91 bird species, eight mammals, nine reptiles, and eight amphibians.
Further analysis identified 163 macrofungi species and over 50 invertebrate species, including 33 types of butterflies. The study underscores the plateaus' vital role as carbon sinks, aiding in carbon assimilation and microclimatic buffering. These lateritic formations also support pollinator and decomposer networks, contributing significantly to local ecosystems. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), whose Advanced Training Institute is located on the Betul plateau, commissioned the study to inform conservation efforts.
ONGC-ATI has designated five biodiversity monitoring plots for green restoration and enhancement, with strict guidelines against further construction. These plots will serve as a long-term ecological observatory. Future plans include invasive species removal and enrichment with native flora, reinforcing the commitment to preserving this unique habitat.
