Goa Riverbed Dredging to Ease Floods
2 Oct
Summary
- Mapusa River tributary desilting aims to prevent flooding.
- Project includes widening channel to 15m and deepening by 2m.
- Environmental impact assessment to span 90 days.
The Captain of Ports has initiated plans to desilt a 2.1-km section of a Mapusa River tributary, from its confluence with the river to Teen Manos in Ucassaim. This project aims to combat heavy siltation and alleviate flooding in agricultural fields in Moira and Ucassaim. The plan includes widening the channel to 15 meters and deepening it by 2 meters.
As part of the process, an agency will be hired to conduct a rapid environmental impact assessment within 90 days. This study will analyze water and sediment characteristics, assess biodiversity, and model sediment movement. It will also evaluate risks to sensitive coastal ecosystems like mangroves.
Previous efforts by the water resources department for a similar project were withdrawn due to concerns over costs and environmental impacts. The selected agency will also develop an environmental management plan and assist in obtaining necessary clearances.
