Mangrove Destruction Sparks Goa Investigation
13 Jun
Summary
- Goa Coastal Zone Authority inspected Moira river for mangrove destruction.
- Protected coastal buffer damage prompts inquiry into those responsible.
- Mangrove removal exposes low-lying villages to monsoon flooding.

An inspection was conducted by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) along the Moira river to investigate the extensive destruction of mangroves. The authority's expert member, engineer, and surveyor visited the site, accompanied by environmental activists and the complainant. This inquiry aims to identify individuals responsible for damaging the protected coastal buffer zone.
Last month, concerns were raised regarding the irreversible damage to the mangroves, which are vital habitats for various species and crucial storm barriers. The removal of these natural defenses has heightened the risk of monsoon flooding for residents in Moira, Tivim, Colvale, and surrounding low-lying areas.
