Glossop Tip Closure Sparks Fly-Tipping Fears
13 Apr
Summary
- Campaigners warn tip closure could increase fly-tipping.
- Derbyshire Council cites low usage and cost savings.
- Thousands have signed petitions against the proposed closure.

Campaigners are raising alarms over Derbyshire County Council's proposal to close the Glossop Household Recycling Centre on Melandra Road. They argue that shutting down this facility would likely result in an "influx" of fly-tipping within the community.
Derbyshire County Council has initiated a consultation regarding the closure, citing that the Melandra Road site experiences lower usage compared to its other waste facilities. The council estimates that closing the tip would save approximately £360,000 each year. However, residents express concerns that the nearest alternative site in Buxton is too distant for practical use, leading to the creation of two petitions opposing the closure, which have collectively gathered over 4,000 signatures.
Local residents shared personal challenges that make travel to Buxton difficult, citing costs and physical limitations. Concerns have also been voiced by local charities that fear an increase in discarded items being offloaded onto them. High Peak MP Jon Pearce is supporting one of the petitions, emphasizing the community's opposition. Councillor Carol Wood has stated that no final decision has been made, and the council is actively seeking public input on the matter.
