Dry conditions exacerbated wildfires across the continent, with over 647,000 hectares burned in the EU by early September. Oceans outside polar regions also recorded their highest monthly sea-surface temperatures. Scientists attribute this long-term warming trend to human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, warning that extreme heat events will persist as long as fossil fuels are burned.
