In the face of potential global catastrophes, Australia emerges as the most resilient location, according to a new study. These large-scale events, capable of killing over 10% of the world's population, are under-researched but possible, affecting all nations to varying degrees.

Researchers analyzed factors contributing to resilience against risks such as sunlight obstruction (nuclear war, volcanic eruptions), infrastructure destruction (geomagnetic storms, cyber attacks), and biological hazards. Countries with strong industrial bases, less reliance on global trade, and favorable geography, like large islands with self-sufficient economies, show greater endurance.

Democratic processes and equality are also critical for functional governance during crises. While no single place is immune to all risks, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, and New Zealand are identified as relatively safer havens. The United States, for instance, faces vulnerabilities due to its location and past responses to crises.
