Ghaziabad Unveils Plan to Revive Polluted Hindon River
5 Sep
Summary
- Ghaziabad forms expert committee to rejuvenate Hindon River
- Untapped drains, encroachment, and pollution plague the river
- Integrated approach planned to tackle issues like illegal units

In September 2025, the Ghaziabad district administration took a significant step towards the rejuvenation and preservation of the Hindon River. They formed a 'working committee of experts' comprising 22 different departments and experts, tasked with carrying out various agendas related to the river.
The Hindon River, which originates in Saharanpur and flows through Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad before meeting the Yamuna, has long suffered from unchecked pollution, encroachment, and neglect. The newly unveiled plan focuses on key priorities, including 100% tapping of untapped drains, clear demarcation of flood plains and removal of encroachment, desilting of the river, identification and closure of illegal industrial units, and plantation along the river zone.
According to officials, each department will soon share their specific timelines for completing the assigned tasks, and regular inter-departmental meetings will be held to ensure progress. Environmentalists have welcomed the plan, but they also caution that many such action plans have been initiated in the past with limited success. They emphasize the need for an integrated approach across all the districts where the Hindon River flows, as well as the revival of connected water bodies, to achieve meaningful rejuvenation.
