Ghaziabad Shuts 250+ Polluting Industries
19 Jun
Summary
- Over 250 industrial units in Ghaziabad were shut down.
- Dyeing units discharging untreated wastewater into the Yamuna were targeted.
- Authorities are preventing sealed industries from resuming operations.

Ghaziabad's district administration, in collaboration with the UP Pollution Control Board and the electricity department, has taken decisive action by shutting down over 250 industrial units. These units, predominantly dyeing facilities in Loni and Sahibabad, were found to be discharging untreated industrial effluents directly into the Shahdara drain, which subsequently pollutes the Yamuna River.
Authorities are implementing stringent measures to prevent the resumption of operations by these sealed industries. Working closely with the electricity department, officials are ensuring that non-compliant units cannot regain access to power and continue their polluting activities. This action is part of a broader survey targeting industries that flout environmental norms.
The crackdown aims to improve compliance with environmental regulations and significantly reduce the discharge of untreated industrial waste into water bodies. Inspections are continuing across various industrial clusters, with a focus on identifying additional industries contributing to water pollution. Around 500 water-based industries operate in Ghaziabad, and authorities are assessing their adherence to pollution-control measures.
Some of these industries have existed for decades, predating current stringent regulatory frameworks. Current operational requirements include obtaining clearances for fire safety, pollution control, and labor department approvals. The ongoing inspections signal a commitment to environmental protection and sustained monitoring of industrial activities in the region.
