7 Jun
Summary
- District magistrate ordered a coordinated drive to remove river encroachments.
- Unauthorised colonies discharge millions of liters of untreated sewage daily.
- Encroachment removal is a priority before monsoon to prevent floods.

District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar has directed officials to launch a coordinated drive to identify and remove encroachments along the Hindon river in Ghaziabad. This directive comes after a state government report informed the National Green Tribunal that 258 unauthorised colonies are discharging untreated sewage daily into the river.
Teams will cross-reference revenue records, irrigation data, and maps with ground conditions to pinpoint illegal occupations. The state's chief secretary previously informed the NGT that Ghaziabad has a significant share of 888 unauthorised colonies across six districts, discharging nearly 40 million litres of sewage daily into the Hindon.
Mandar emphasized that no illegal construction or encroachment on riverbed land will be tolerated. He also ordered a special campaign for the environmental conservation and rejuvenation of the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, stressing the urgency of clearing encroachments before the monsoon to mitigate flood risks.
