Mumbai Society's Tree Pruning Exposes Bird Nests, Sparks Outrage
22 Jul
Summary
- Improper tree pruning at a Ghatkopar society exposed multiple bird nests.
- Activists have complained to BMC demanding an FIR under the Trees Act.
- An official inquiry is underway into the unscientific tree cutting incident.

An investigation has been launched by the BMC's N ward gardens department into the unscientific and insensitive pruning of trees at the Kalpataru Aura society in Ghatkopar. The excessive trimming, which occurred from July 7 to 10, fully exposed several bird nests, including those of crows and mynas, destroying eggs within them.
Activists from PAWS-MUMBAI have lodged a formal complaint with the BMC, urging them to file an FIR under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. A local resident expressed shock at the state of the nests and called for legal action. The N ward office had reportedly granted permission only for scientific pruning of marked trees, not the extensive cutting that took place.
