Ganga Turtle Sanctuary Gets Eco-Zone Boost
25 Sep
Summary
- Eco-sensitive zone mapping completed for Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary.
- A 500-meter buffer from the riverbank is proposed for protection.
- New roadmap aims to balance conservation with local development.
The mapping of the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) surrounding the Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary along the Ganga has concluded, encompassing Prayagraj, Bhadohi, and Mirzapur. This significant achievement sets the stage for developing a comprehensive conservation and management strategy for the 30-kilometer stretch.
Officials have recommended submitting a proposal to the state government for approval. This proposal outlines the demarcation of the ESZ with a 500-meter buffer zone extending from the riverbank. The sanctuary, established in 2020, is crucial for conserving aquatic biodiversity and providing a habitat for several threatened turtle species.
The mapping exercise, which began in December 2025, sought to balance the needs of aquatic wildlife conservation with local development initiatives. The new ESZ notification is expected to bring clarity regarding activities like mining, industrial setups, and certain construction projects that may be prohibited or regulated. This will help protect riverbanks, erosion-prone areas, forests, and wetlands from pollution and unregulated human activities.
This initiative is also anticipated to reduce disputes over land use and restrictions in the areas neighboring the sanctuary. The process involves the state forest department preparing a proposal, which is then reviewed by the National Board for Wildlife's standing committee before the Union environment ministry issues the final notification. The presence of turtles is vital for river ecosystem health, and the ESZ will provide a clearer legal framework for their protection while allowing compatible development.
