Ganga Canal Closure Halts Water Supply to 15 UP Districts
21 Oct
Summary
- Ganga Canal closed until November 8 for maintenance and repairs.
- Water supply disruption impacts 15 Uttar Pradesh districts.
- Drinking water supply to parts of the NCR is also affected.
The Ganga Canal has been closed from Tuesday midnight until November 8 for essential annual maintenance. This closure includes desilting operations and redevelopment work on its ghats. Consequently, irrigation water supply will be interrupted across 15 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The disruption also affects drinking water availability in several parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). Water from the canal is a crucial source for the Pratap Vihar treatment plant in Ghaziabad, which supplies the region. The Ganga Sabha has requested authorities to maintain a minimum water flow at Brahmakund in Haridwar for pilgrims.
The Ganga Canal, originally constructed in 1854, stretches approximately 560 km from Haridwar. Despite originating in Uttarakhand, the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department manages its operations due to ongoing asset-sharing disagreements between the states. Field officers have been instructed to ensure adequate water levels at Har Ki Pauri.
