Following Mumbai's Ganeshotsav festival, a remarkable initiative saw the collection of approximately eight tonnes of abandoned footwear. This waste diversion effort, spearheaded by the BMC and the GreenSole Foundation, aims to prevent discarded shoes from ending up in landfills.
The collected footwear undergoes a thorough upcycling process at GreenSole's facility. Components are sorted, washed, and dismantled, with usable soles and uppers being repurposed into new shoes. Even materials not suitable for footwear are transformed into items like school bags and sitting mats.
This upcycled footwear will be distributed to children from Class I to VIII, benefiting students in BMC schools and those in Maharashtra's tribal regions. GreenSole estimates its broader upcycling work has already reduced nearly 4,374 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions since 2016.
