Japan Town Cancels Cherry Blossom Festival Amidst Tourist Chaos

The popular cherry blossom festival in Fujiyoshida, a town situated near Mount Fuji, has been cancelled this year. This decision by local authorities stems from an overwhelming surge in tourist numbers, which has become unmanageable for the residents.

For ten years, the festival in Arakurayama Sengen Park aimed to enhance the area's appeal. However, recent years have seen dramatic increases in visitors, with up to 10,000 daily during peak season. This overtourism has led to severe traffic congestion, increased litter, and disturbances for locals.

Residents have reported instances of tourists trespassing into private gardens, using them as restrooms, and causing disturbances when confronted. The town's mayor expressed a strong sense of crisis, stating the need to protect the dignity and living environment of citizens.

This situation mirrors other recent incidents in Japan. In 2024, authorities installed a large black barrier at a well-known photo spot in Fujikawaguchiko to deter misbehaving tourists. Other countries are also implementing measures against overtourism, such as Rome's new fee for the Trevi Fountain viewing area and Venice's day-tripper charges.
