France's Ski Slopes Vanish as Winters Warm
20 Jan
Summary
- Over 186 ski resorts have permanently closed across France.
- Warmer winters and unreliable snowpack make operations unsustainable.
- Resort closures impact local economies, traditions, and water supply.

Across France, a concerning "ghost resort" trend has led to the permanent closure of over 186 ski resorts, including the historic Céüze. Escalating global temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns have resulted in insufficient snowpack, rendering many resorts financially unviable.
Céüze, for example, incurred an annual operating cost of €450,000 but struggled to remain open for its required three-month season. It failed to open in 2016 and 2017, and in its final season of 2018, it operated for only six weeks.
The repercussions extend beyond the ski industry, affecting local communities through loss of tourism revenue and cultural traditions. Reduced snowpack also diminishes natural water reservoirs crucial for agriculture and urban supply during warmer months, potentially increasing flood risks and wildfire dangers.
