France is experiencing an exceptionally early and intense drought, with gardens in cities like Lyon smelling of hay due to prolonged heatwaves. The country recorded 45% less rainfall in June, leading to widespread water scarcity. As of July 15th, 99 French departments are under some form of water ban, with 43 facing the highest "crisis" level of restrictions.

These restrictions significantly impact daily life, prohibiting garden watering during specific hours and imposing hefty fines for violations. Some regions have implemented total bans on activities like car washing and refilling private swimming pools. Controversially, golf courses face less stringent water consumption reduction targets compared to residential areas.

The low water levels are also affecting river navigation, leading to cancellations of some cruise and barge holidays on canals like the Meuse and Marne. Watersports such as kayaking and paddleboarding are also impacted, with portage often required on shallower stretches.

Fire risks have escalated due to the dry conditions, prompting bans on fireworks for Bastille Day and potentially for Assumption Day. Forest fires have already broken out near Paris and in the Var region, with severe penalties for those causing them.

While high temperatures pose a challenge for tourists, with attractions like the Eiffel Tower closing temporarily, the primary advice from the Home Office is to "drink plenty of water and stay inside in the cool."
