Four Typhoons Dance Together: China on High Alert
26 Aug
Summary
- Four tropical cyclones simultaneously swirled, triggering emergency responses.
- Typhoons Saudel, Narra, Gaenari, and Atsani formed an active season's storms.
- El Nino weather pattern linked to heightened typhoon activity in the Pacific.

A rare meteorological event saw four tropical cyclones swirling simultaneously over the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea, leading to emergency preparations across coastal China.
The storms, identified as Typhoons Saudel, Narra, Gaenari, and Atsani, are the 18th through 21st named storms of an unusually active season. This phenomenon, dubbed the "four typhoons dancing together," triggered immediate responses, with provinces from Hainan to Zhejiang closing tourist attractions and recalling fishing vessels.
Typhoon Atsani formed on Monday, completing the lineup. Saudel, a super typhoon, was predicted to make landfall between Thursday and Friday on the eastern seaboard. Narra made landfall in Hainan on Tuesday, impacting southern regions with heavy rainfall. Gaenari made landfall in Fujian on Monday before dissipating.
Experts attribute the increased typhoon activity to the El Nino weather pattern, which fosters favorable conditions in the western Pacific. While uncommon, such simultaneous typhoon events have occurred historically. The Central Meteorological Observatory warned of continued active typhoon conditions and the possibility of one to two additional storms in the coming 10 days, urging preparedness for secondary disasters like flooding.
