Food Waste: A Secret Climate Super-Polluter
8 Oct
Summary
- Food waste generates five times more greenhouse gas emissions than aviation.
- Household waste constitutes 60% of all food waste globally.
- Black soldier flies offer a solution by consuming food waste and creating protein.

Food waste is a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, producing five times more than the aviation sector. This waste, largely from excess production, spoilage, or poor planning, results in over a billion uneaten meals daily. Households account for a significant 60% of this global waste, which ends up in landfills, generating methane.
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, traps 86 times more heat than carbon dioxide over two decades. While it contributes significantly to warming, its faster breakdown compared to CO2 offers a silver lining. Composting food waste, for example, results in CO2, which has a lower warming impact in the short term.
An innovative solution involves black soldier flies, whose larvae consume food waste, effectively recycling it. This method is already in use in Uganda and Malawi. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) aims to halve food waste by 2030 as part of its Food Waste Breakthrough programme. Without action, food waste is projected to double by 2050, exacerbating climate change.
