22 Aug
Summary
- A $117 million project is complete, burying a seawall under sand.
- The seawall protects 2.5 miles of scenic State Road A1A.
- Native plants and trees were added to stabilize the shoreline.

A major coastal defense initiative costing $117 million has concluded, fortifying a vulnerable section of State Road A1A in Central Florida. The project involved burying a substantial seawall approximately 2.5 miles long beneath the sand to shield the roadway from relentless storm erosion.
This innovative line of defense is now hidden from view, with crews covering the seawall using nearly 238,000 tons of sand. The dunes above have been rebuilt and stabilized with native plants and palmetto trees. This effort not only protects the vital road but also enhances the natural shoreline and improves access with 28 replaced beach walkovers.
