Decibel Danger: Fireworks Over 125dB Face Strict Ban
1 Aug
Summary
- Firecrackers exceeding 125 decibels will be banned.
- PESO will take stringent action against non-compliant fireworks.
- Only 'green crackers' are permitted as per Supreme Court directives.
In anticipation of the festive season, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has assured the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court that strict enforcement will be applied to firecrackers exceeding noise limits. Fireworks with decibel levels above 125 will be prohibited according to the Explosives Rules, 2008. This commitment was made during the hearing of Public Interest Litigations concerning pollution control and environmental compliance in Nagpur.
PESO has detailed that measures are in place to prevent the manufacture, storage, and sale of firecrackers that surpass the 125-decibel threshold. Licensed dealers in Nagpur and Amravati have been formally notified to follow statutory regulations and prominently display safety guidelines. The organization conducts regular inspections, testing samples at the National Academy for Petroleum and Explosives Safety in Nagpur to ensure compliance.
Furthermore, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change affirmed that only 'green crackers' are permissible, in line with Supreme Court directives. The ministry also proposed involving the Union Ministry of Education to integrate lessons on noise and air pollution into the school curriculum. Organizers of a recent event defended their program, stating all necessary permissions were secured and no rules were broken.
