New Reservoir Sparks Local Debate: Traffic Fears Rise
16 Jun
Summary
- Traffic impact and junction safety are top public concerns.
- Priorities include toilets, cafes, wildlife spots, and parking.
- Reservoir aims to secure water supply and be operational by 2036.

A recent public consultation on Anglian Water's Fens Reservoir project in Cambridgeshire has concluded, revealing significant community feedback. The primary concern raised by 438 respondents centers on the potential traffic disruption and safety of road junctions during and after construction.
Respondents also outlined their desired amenities for the reservoir site, with a strong emphasis on facilities such as toilets, cafes, wildlife viewing spots, and ample low-cost parking. Anglian Water has deemed this feedback "really valuable" and will integrate it into their ongoing proposals.
Designated a project of national significance, the Fens Reservoir aims to enhance water security in a dry region and is targeted for operational readiness by 2036. The project, planned north of Chatteris, is one of two prioritized reservoirs in the UK and is expected to supply water to approximately 250,000 homes.
Further environmental and ground condition studies are scheduled until December to assess areas for pipe infrastructure and the main reservoir. While these investigations involve drilling and excavation, they do not signify the commencement of construction. A formal planning application is anticipated in 2027.
