Farmer Turns Loss to Lakhs with Multi-Crop Magic
29 May
Summary
- Farmer transformed 11 hectares into a lucrative enterprise.
- Multi-crop farming boosted income from Rs 30,000 to Rs 3 lakh per acre.
- The farm successfully survived severe droughts without extra irrigation.

A farmer in Tamil Nadu's Pollachi district, previously experiencing losses on his coconut trees, has revolutionized his 11-hectare farm into a highly profitable venture. By shifting to a multi-crop, tree-based agricultural model in 2009, inspired by the Save Soil - Cauvery Calling initiative, his annual income per acre has surged from Rs 30,000 to an impressive Rs 2.5-3 lakh.
The successful transition involved diversifying from three crop varieties to over 14, including coconuts, nutmeg, pepper, bananas, turmeric, and various trees. This diversification not only secured his income but also enhanced soil health, with organic carbon content rising significantly. Remarkably, his farm weathered two severe droughts, including a 2017 crisis, by employing low-water agricultural methods like mulching and rainwater harvesting, proving resilient when neighboring farms struggled.
This multi-crop strategy acts as a crucial economic safeguard, ensuring that fluctuations in one crop's market price are offset by others. The Cauvery Calling initiative has played a vital role, planting millions of trees across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to restore river flows. However, challenges such as scaling, funding, and policy reform, including support for irrigation and timber sales, remain obstacles to wider adoption of such climate-resilient agricultural practices.
