Fabric Credits: Turning Textile Waste into Cash
12 Sep
Summary
- A new credit system assigns financial value to textile waste.
- Brands buy credits to fund textile recovery and recycling projects.
- The model is processing 50 tons of textile waste monthly.
A novel approach is emerging to tackle fashion's significant textile waste problem. Clarabeth Concaret, an entrepreneur from Washington State, developed Fabricure, a system that assigns financial value to discarded clothing through fabric credits. This innovative model draws inspiration from carbon and plastic credit systems.
Fashion brands can purchase these credits, which correspond to the amount of textile waste they produce. The revenue generated is then channeled into supporting textile recovery and recycling projects. By November 2023, Fabricure reported processing about 50 tons of textile waste each month.
The Fabricure model operates in countries like Ghana, Togo, Kenya, and Chile, often partnering with women-led recycling initiatives. This system aims to create a sustainable financial source for recycling and upcycling projects that traditionally rely on grants.
While this credit system addresses the challenge of managing waste, it is emphasized that it is not a complete solution for making the fashion industry circular. Fabricure's approach focuses on valuing and recovering waste that remains after efforts to reduce overall fabric use and consumption.
