Next week, eight European cities await the announcement of the EU's top green titles. The European Commission's annual Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards celebrate cities enhancing environmental quality and resident well-being. The winners will be revealed on October 8th in Guimarães, Portugal, the designated 2026 Green Capital.
Five cities are contending for the Green Capital title: Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko-Biała (Poland), Košice (Slovakia), Porto (Portugal), and Zaragoza (Spain). Additionally, Benidorm, Chiclana de la Frontera (Spain), and Estarreja (Portugal) are finalists for the Green Leaf awards, recognizing smaller urban areas.
Judged on air and water quality, biodiversity, waste management, emissions cuts, and climate adaptation, finalists showcase diverse strengths. Zaragoza leads in biodiversity and flood risk reduction. Porto excels in water management and climate preparedness, while Benidorm has significantly increased its green spaces and tree canopy.
Winners will receive substantial funding: €600,000 for the Green Capital and €200,000 for Green Leaf recipients, to implement environmental initiatives. This recognition highlights a broader European trend of cities prioritizing nature, green spaces, and sustainable practices in urban planning.
