Europe's Energy Security Under Threat From Wind Power Lies
6 May
Summary
- Thousands of anti-wind social media posts analyzed in Europe.
- Disinformation campaigns pose a systemic risk to European security.
- Sweden generated 99% of its electricity from low-carbon sources last year.

A comprehensive analysis of over 42,000 social media posts has uncovered a significant disinformation network targeting wind power across Europe. This coordinated campaign, spanning platforms like Facebook, X, and TikTok from May 2024 to February 2026, generated millions of engagements and views. Researchers warn this misinformation poses a systemic risk to Europe's energy security.
Sweden, which leads the EU in low-carbon electricity generation at 99% in 2025, has been identified as a hotspot for anti-wind narratives. The study found that nearly 7,000 posts originated in Sweden, although countries like the UK and Germany saw higher engagement on their anti-wind content. These narratives fall into categories such as 'fraud,' 'environmental destruction,' and 'technological unviability.'
Despite expert consensus and studies debunking claims about wind turbines harming wildlife or causing blackouts, disinformation is impacting public perception. A significant portion of EU citizens now believe renewables will increase energy prices and that electric vehicles have comparable environmental impacts to fossil fuels. This trend is seen as a threat to democracy and economic competitiveness, with some politicians in the US and Europe reportedly leveraging these sentiments.
