Europe's Heat Shock: Adaptation is Simple, Says Expert
17 Feb
Summary
- Adapting to a hotter future is common sense, says climate advisor.
- Europe is vulnerable and unprepared for extreme weather events.
- EU must mandate risk assessments and boost climate resilience funding.

Europe must prepare for a significantly hotter future, with a new report advising officials to brace for a world 2.8-3.3C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Maarten van Aalst, a member of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), stated that adapting to this reality is "not rocket science" and largely involves common sense measures. However, he warned that Europe is already experiencing the consequences of its insufficient preparation.
Recent years have seen devastating weather extremes across the continent, including fatal floods in Germany and Spain, and widespread wildfires. Van Aalst emphasized that Europe's preparedness for such events is inadequate, highlighting the urgent need to upgrade early warning systems. The ESABCC recommends that the EU mandate climate risk assessments and integrate resilience into all policies, urging greater investment in protective measures from both public and private sources.
