16 Jul
Summary
- France faces its most extensive wildfires since World War II.
- Aragon, Spain, reports 4,500 hectares destroyed by an out-of-control fire.
- Scottish Highlands wildfire caused evacuations but has been contained.

France is confronting its most severe forest fires on record since the conclusion of World War II. President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the critical situation, noting that records have already been broken before the peak of the wildfire season. Investigations have been launched into potential causes, including sparks from a saw used during motorway repairs and the careless disposal of a cigarette butt.
In Spain, a fire in Aragon has devastated an estimated 4,500 hectares of land, remaining out of control near the village of Orés. This has necessitated the evacuation of several nearby villages, affecting around 500 people, with authorities anticipating several more days to fully contain the blaze.
Simultaneously, a wildfire in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park led to the evacuation of homes and campsites. The fire, which burned through 3.5 kilometers of heathland, was reported contained on Thursday afternoon.
