Europe Scorched: France & Spain Battle Record Wildfires

Record-breaking heatwaves have ignited devastating wildfires across southern Europe, forcing widespread evacuations. In France, approximately 40,000 people were ordered to leave the popular resort area of Cap Ferret on Friday. Hundreds of holidaymakers were ferried off the peninsula by boat as fires that originated inland moved towards the Atlantic coast. Over 12,500 hectares of forest have been consumed by these blazes, with 32 separate fires burning across France. Another fire neared Biscarrosse, prompting the evacuation of 23,000 people.

Central Spain is grappling with its most severe wildfire crisis, with 19,000 people evacuated near Madrid and Avila. The fires have merged, prompting a national emergency declaration. Regional officials described it as a "perfect storm" of heat, wind, and multiple fire fronts. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez attributed the fires to climate change, urging political rivals to address the escalating "climate emergency."

Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record last month. France's late June heatwave was its most intense ever, and June was Spain's second-hottest on record. The unusually dry forests across these regions are highly vulnerable, with France having already lost 50,000 hectares this year, nearly four times the amount by the same period last year.
