Europe Scorched: Wildfires Rage Amidst Record Heatwaves

Wildfires are currently raging across France and central England, fueled by a new wave of record-breaking heat and exceptionally dry landscapes. France is experiencing its driest year on record, leading to intense fires. One blaze in the Landes region on the southwest coast forced more than 500 people to evacuate their homes.

These incidents are occurring in normally cooler regions as well, with a historic fire near Bordeaux last month displacing a quarter-million people. In England, wildfires broke out across the West Midlands following the nation's hottest day of the year, resulting in the destruction of several houses. This year has seen at least 1,017 wildfires recorded in England and Wales.

Temperatures in France approached 41 C (106 F) in several areas, while west London recorded 38.1 C (100.6 F). These extreme temperatures are linked to human-caused climate change. In northern Greece, over 300 vacationers and residents were evacuated by sea due to a wildfire threatening seaside homes.
