Europe Reels: Heatwave Fuels Drought, Fires Amidst Record Drought

Europe is once again facing a severe heatwave, intensifying conditions following periods of record drought that have driven rivers to historic lows and fueled extensive wildfires. Many areas across Britain and France are under extreme heat warnings, with temperatures expected to climb. This comes after mainland France and Switzerland experienced their widest droughts on record in July.

Parched conditions have led to new fires erupting in Greece and Spain, with firefighters battling blazes near Athens and in southwestern Spain. France and Spain have already seen historic wildfires this summer due to tinder-dry conditions. Some 95% of mainland France and 99% of Switzerland endured drought conditions in July, marking record figures.

Rivers across Europe, including the Rhine in Germany and the Vistula in Poland, are reaching record low levels, potentially impacting industrial navigation and the operation of nuclear plants that rely on river water for cooling. Heatwaves in June alone led to at least 12,000 excess deaths across nine European countries, a toll expected to rise.

Unusually high temperatures are also forecast in countries not typically accustomed to such heat, including Switzerland, Austria, and Hungary. This situation underscores the accelerating impact of human-caused climate change on the continent, which is warming faster than the global average.
