Europe Cracks Down on Fashion's Eco Lies
23 Jul
Summary
- Many fashion brands miss environmental targets or set distant deadlines.
- Europe is tightening rules against misleading 'eco-friendly' claims.
- New directives aim to hold fashion brands accountable for sustainability.

Europe is implementing stricter regulations to combat greenwashing within the fashion sector. A review of 468 sustainability commitments from 17 major apparel brands revealed that approximately half of the goals with past deadlines were not achieved. Furthermore, a significant portion of these commitments, about a third, have deadlines set for 2030 or 2050, delaying accountability.
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is already pushing companies toward more rigorous environmental, social, and governance reporting. The upcoming Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition directive, effective from September 2026, will further clarify anti-greenwashing rules. This directive may prohibit broad claims like 'eco-friendly' if they lack verifiable evidence and impose stricter conditions on climate commitments with distant targets.
