Eravikulam National Park in Kerala officially reopened on April 1, concluding a two-month period dedicated to the breeding of the endangered Nilgiri tahr. This significant wildlife sanctuary, located across the Idukki and Ernakulam districts within the Western Ghats, is now accessible to the public. Visitors can enter the park daily between 8 AM and 2 PM to experience its rich biodiversity.
The park's terrain features high-altitude grasslands interspersed with shola forests, and it is home to South India's highest peak, Anamudi. Besides hosting the largest population of Nilgiri tahr, Eravikulam supports a variety of other species, including gaur, wild boar, and numerous endemic birds and primates.
The Nilgiri tahr, a unique mountain-dwelling herbivore, is found exclusively in the southern Western Ghats. Eravikulam National Park is renowned for harboring the largest remaining population of this species. The park is conveniently accessible from Munnar and well-connected by road from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with airports in Kochi and Coimbatore serving as nearby access points.
