Australia's Largest Coal Plant Stays Open Until 2029
20 Jan
Summary
- Eraring coal plant extended by two years until 2029.
- Government cites energy grid security concerns.
- Climate advocates call the extension a 'disaster'.

Australia's largest coal-fired power plant, Eraring, will continue operations until April 2029, an extension of two years from its previously scheduled closure. This decision by operator Origin Energy aims to ensure energy grid stability, addressing concerns raised by the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo) about potential "strength deficits" in New South Wales.
The New South Wales government stated the extension provides certainty for workers and consumers, while contributing to state emissions reduction targets. Minister for Environment Penny Sharpe highlighted significant increases in renewable energy capacity as a replacement for ageing coal stations. Origin's CEO noted the extension allows more time for renewable projects and storage to be delivered.
However, climate advocates and the NSW Greens have fiercely criticized the decision, labeling it a "disaster" for emissions targets and human health. They argue that continued operation of the 2,880MW plant will hinder progress towards legislated climate goals, despite the government's commitments to a green energy future.
