English River Swims Pose Health Risk, Say Campaigners

Campaigners have voiced strong criticism regarding the state of bathing water quality in England, with alarming statistics indicating significant health risks associated with swimming in many river locations. Data released shows that all but four of England's designated river bathing sites received the lowest classification of 'poor'.

James Wallace, chief executive of River Action, stated that despite these sites being highly protected, the government's own figures expose the dangers of swimming in inland waters. He contrasted England's 35 inland bathing sites with France's over 1,200, most of which are rated 'excellent,' highlighting a substantial deficit in freshwater protection and public health measures.

The poor water quality is attributed to sewage and agricultural run-off. However, the Environment Agency also pointed to natural factors like birds and dogs. Despite these challenges, the agency reported that 87% of its 449 designated bathing spots meet 'excellent' or 'good' standards, an improvement from the previous year.
