13 Feb
Summary
- Thorington Street is England's first dark sky community.
- The hamlet boasts clear views of the Milky Way.
- A nine-year campaign led to its recognition by DarkSky International.

Thorington Street, a small hamlet in Suffolk, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming England's inaugural International DarkSky Community. This designation, awarded by DarkSky International, recognizes the hamlet's exceptionally dark skies, where the Milky Way is clearly visible.
The achievement is the culmination of a dedicated nine-year campaign spearheaded by the Dedham Vale Society. Astronomers noted the area's prime location, offering some of the darkest skies outside London.
To gain this status, the community successfully committed to a lighting management plan, ensuring no new street lights would be installed. Residents were supportive of measures like downlights and motion sensors.
Thorington Street joins a select group of dark sky locations across the UK, including sites in Scotland, Wales, and the Channel Islands. The hamlet now features a DarkSky Discovery Centre housed in a Tudor barn, supporting stargazing and educational events.
