Areas across the south of England are poised to benefit from over £45 million in funding dedicated to enhancing flood defences. This investment is part of a comprehensive £750 million national programme aimed at improving flood resilience across England. The funding period spans from April 2026 to March 2029, allocating resources to over 600 flood schemes nationwide.
Specific projects include over £10 million for Portsmouth's Southsea Coastal Scheme to combat sea flooding, and funding for alleviation schemes in Oxford, Windsor, and Maidenhead. The Oxford scheme will receive approximately £416,000 to create a new stream and wetland habitat, reducing flood risk to properties, transport, and utilities, with an estimated lifetime saving of over £1.6 billion.
Additional funding targets the Maidenhead, Windsor, and Eton Flood Alleviation Scheme to address severe flooding in areas like Datchet. Coastal defence modernisation is also underway on the Isle of Wight for Ventnor, and flood risk reduction for Poole town centre is addressed by the Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill scheme. This record national programme underscores a commitment to protecting families and businesses from extreme weather.
