Endangered Heron Rescued from Fishing Line Trap

An endangered black-crowned night heron was rescued on Saturday, July 18, from a perilous entanglement in fishing line at Lake Redman. The bird had become caught on a tree branch, a situation worsened by fishermen leaving discarded lines and lures. Tracie Young of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center coordinated the rescue, which involved the Pennsylvania Game Warden and the Alliance Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to carefully free the heron from the fishing line. The bird was then transported to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center for treatment. During examination, two types of fishing line and three lures were removed. Fortunately, no hooks were embedded in the heron's skin, and a line wrapped around its leg was not tight enough to cause serious injury.

Herons are considered high-stress birds, and this individual was found to be exhausted from its ordeal. The black-crowned night heron is an endangered species in Pennsylvania due to declining populations. The center is monitoring its recovery, with plans to release it back to its rookery or a suitable habitat like Kiwanis Lake once it has recuperated.

This incident highlights the dangers discarded fishing gear poses to wildlife. Wildlife rescuers hope fishermen will be more mindful of cleaning up their lines and hooks to prevent future tragedies. The rescue was a collaborative effort involving concerned citizens, emergency services, and wildlife rehabilitators.
