According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) official Daniyal Sial, the post-mortem report cited "senility" as the cause of Bibi's death. Bibi had been at the zoo since 2000, when she was captured by police after escaping from a private home in the PECHS area of Karachi, where she had been kept illegally as a pet. Bibi's male companion was killed during the police operation at the time.
The zoo is now left with only one surviving female chimpanzee, as Bibi's male partner also died three years later due to a malignant growth. Chimpanzees are listed as an endangered species, and their trade is strictly regulated under international laws. However, Bibi and her mate were among the primates previously brought to the country through shady deals before the enactment of stricter wildlife protection laws.
