A female black bear, known by wildlife officials as Yellow 2291, has been a notable presence in Encino neighborhoods this week. The bear has traversed nearly four miles since first being spotted on Tuesday night, with sightings near major roadways and residential areas.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials are actively monitoring Yellow 2291. They confirmed she was collared and gave birth to three cubs in May 2024. Her GPS collar battery recently failed, leading to its remote removal, though she retains ear tags. Efforts are ongoing to re-collar her for continued monitoring.
Officials stated Yellow 2291 is not exhibiting threatening behavior, but they advise residents to give her ample space and avoid interaction. They stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy fear of wildlife by not approaching or feeding them. Residents are also encouraged to secure trash cans, remove fallen fruit, and eliminate outdoor pet food to deter bears.
The bear's three cubs are presumed to be independent due to their age. Anyone observing Yellow 2291 or other bears is asked to file a Wildlife Incident Report on the CDFW website. Securing crawlspaces and areas under decks is also recommended to prevent potential denning.
