Homeless Encampment Cleared from Nature Preserve

An encampment situated at the Santa Ana River Marsh in Newport Beach was dismantled on Wednesday. This action aligns with a recently enacted countywide ordinance that prohibits camping in designated county areas, including parks and flood channels.

Prior to the clearance, outreach teams engaged with individuals residing in the marsh, extending offers of shelter, housing, treatment, and supportive services. Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley emphasized the necessity of the operation, citing fire risks and the protection of the sensitive natural habitat as primary concerns.

While the new ordinance empowers law enforcement to issue citations and make arrests for violations, Foley highlighted ongoing efforts to connect residents with resources, noting an increase in service acceptance over time. Restoration work and fence repairs are planned for the marsh area after debris removal is complete.
