The project has secured nearly 75 cents of land from Hindustan Insecticides Limited, paving the way for its implementation after significant delays.
The Kuzhikandam creek was identified in 2011 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change as one of twelve toxic dumping sites nationwide needing remediation under the National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF) program. Investigations by the Central Pollution Control Board revealed substantial deposits of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, confirming the site's severe contamination.
Funding for the project requires clarity, as NCEF funds have lapsed. Current proposals suggest a 60% cost share between polluting industries and the State government, with the Centre providing 40%. The SPV will finalize a detailed project report, establish a timeline for tender processes, and award the work, marking a critical phase in addressing Eloor's environmental concerns.
