Ailing elephant Madhubala has shown considerable improvement over the past week, thanks to the dedicated care of a veterinary team. The 22-year-old African elephant had been facing multiple health crises, including severe muscle and weight loss, a leg fracture, and infections.
Dr. Amir Khalil of Four Paws, who supervised her treatment, reported a 70 to 80 percent improvement. Daily treatments included medicine, massage for pain relief, and a diet rich in fresh leaves and vegetables. A specially built medical crush and sand bedding were also implemented to aid her recovery and comfort.
Madhubala's health struggles are a continuation of past difficulties, including a tuberculosis diagnosis and the loss of her companion, Noor Jehan, in 2023. Her relocation to Safari Park in November 2024 reunited her with sisters Sonia and Malika, though Sonia later died from chronic illnesses.
Following successive elephant deaths, an 18-member body was formed to oversee the care of Madhubala and Malika. These elephants were brought to Karachi from Tanzania in 2010. Dr. Khalil expressed optimism for Madhubala's full rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of continued medical treatment, nutrition, and physical therapy.
