A five-year-old female elephant named Durga has become the newest resident at the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Her arrival on Tuesday coincided with the auspicious occasion of Vinayaka Chaturthi.
Durga undertook an extensive journey of nearly 3,000 kilometers, traveling all the way from Assam to reach her new home. Temple staff and devotees gathered to give her a warm welcome, showering her with flowers upon her arrival.
This transfer was made possible after the Madras High Court Bench overturned a previous ruling that had prohibited temples from acquiring elephants through purchase or donation. Following the court's decision, the forest department granted the necessary permissions for Durga's relocation.
The Meenakshi Amman Temple already houses another female elephant named Parvathi. Durga's arrival marks the second recent addition, as a camel was also purchased and brought to the temple a few days prior.
