A distressing incident occurred in Bachhurkhoar village, Nayagram block, where a young elephant calf lost its life after falling into an open well. The tragedy unfolded early Wednesday morning when a herd of approximately 25 elephants entered the area from the Tapoban forest.
While attempting to feed on jackfruits near a brick kiln, the calf unfortunately fell into the concealed well in the darkness. Villagers discovered the distressed herd surrounding the well, exhibiting clear attempts to rescue the calf by extending their trunks and attempting to clear the edges.
Forest officials were alerted and initiated a rescue operation, utilizing a JCB machine to excavate the well's side. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful. The calf's carcass was retrieved and sent for postmortem examination, with officials theorizing that soil collapse during the herd's rescue efforts may have led to the calf's suffocation.
