2 Jun
Summary
- Nine elephant calves have died in Raigarh district this year alone.
- Latest calf found dead near river; infection and injury suspected.
- Extreme summer conditions are stressing wildlife in Chhattisgarh.

A recent elephant calf death in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district marks the ninth such fatality this year, intensifying concerns over wildlife management and animal stress. The calf was discovered near the Mand river in Kharsia forest range. Initial observations point to potential infection and injuries, with forest officials noting the calf appeared unwell before entering the water.
Officials suspect internal infection and fracture injuries, ruling out drowning as the primary cause. Toxicology samples have been sent for analysis, and a joint expert team is examining the rising calf mortality. Factors considered include natural sensitivity of young elephants to infection, dehydration, and stress, as well as accidental injuries.
The recurring deaths coincide with severe summer heatwaves across the state. Raigarh has become a critical elephant corridor, with herds frequently seeking food and water in forest fringes and near villages. Separately, a sloth bear in Marwahi forest division was found dead, with heat stroke suspected due to intense heatwave conditions.
