An awareness seminar was recently organized in Nagercoil to sensitize farmers, fishermen, and the general public to the effects of 'Super' El Nino and climate change. The event was conducted by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management.
Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap addressed the attendees, emphasizing the need for awareness and precautionary actions. He detailed the impacts of El Nino and climate change, such as rainfall variability, rising temperatures, and sea level rise.
The Collector provided specific guidance for farmers on crop protection and water management, advocating for drip irrigation systems and soil testing before fertilizer application. Fishermen were also advised on safety measures to follow during storms and adverse weather conditions.
Agriculture and fishing are vital economic sectors for the district, and the Collector highlighted that El Nino typically leads to increased temperatures and extreme weather. Strengthening preventative measures was deemed crucial to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and climate change.
